How has Pinterest, the picture-based social media network, helped to expand and advertise the tattoo industry you ask? Well look no further, as I am going to tell you exactly how!
I believe that Pinterest has helped to aid the recent gain in popularity that the tattoo industry as a whole, has had. Pinterests’ primary function is to be a platform where people can post pictures. As a society we are very well connected with each other, and as a result of this we are always glued to our phones! One benefit of this, is that we are constantly taking pictures of everything. As we carry around with us the means to do so, every single day! It has got to the point that not taking a photo of a funny moment or something specific you would want to remember, would perhaps be considered weird with this all consumed by social media generation. How else would we remember everything we have ever done? However, this is not a negative thing. In fact, it has worked in favour of Pinterest! And as a result, in favour of the tattoo industry.

Pinterest is a distinct social media network because it is unique. Where other social media network sites, such as Facebook or Twitter, focus on their content and messaging, Pinterest focuses primarily on images. No text, just pictures. The pictures themselves are normally unique and beautiful images, which are calling out for attention! Pinterest is an app where people can share photos under hashtags, which are then sorted into different categories. So, for example, if you were to type “#tattoo” into Pinterest, there would be thousands of results of an array of tattoos.
This aids the popularity of tattoos for just that reason! If someone was feeling unsure about what kind of tattoo they wanted to get, they would more than likely type “tattoo” into Google and hope they like something that comes up. However, as Pinterest is a social media network, through the power of hashtags, the pictures posted onto Pinterest with the same hashtag, would appear on the persons screen. Should they click on a picture, it would take them to Pinterest’s site, where they may peruse all the different tattoos that are available, through the hashtag. This is beneficial to the tattoo industry, as those who aren’t sure, or those who are “just looking” will often type “tattoo” with other keywords, such as “nice” or “pretty” and pick one they like the most. This is beneficial because this way the tattoo industry are gaining clients without having to do a thing. Purely due to the fast-forward nature of social media and how on Pinterest there are over 1 billion pictures alone, it is clear to see that finding a picture of a tattoo would not be hard.

As of 2019, Pinterest had 291 million monthly active users and reportedly over a third of these users are from the United States – so there is room for Pinterest to expand globally. Pinterest has brought attention on how the social eco system is progressing to become more of a global village. A village where people can express what they choose to across an array of dimensions to trigger new ideas through collaboration that align shared interests and values. While some would claim that Pinterest is just a social media network, one could argue that this digital invention has sent waves through our contemporary society. Pinterest has replaced the common scrapbook and bulletin boards, the jump to technology has been easy! However, for others it’s a quicker and easier way of sharing pictures of things they love, as it’s so quick to upload a photo.
Overall, Pinterest has affected us all and the way we communicate about ideas and share our tattoo designs with others.
