Advertise yourself-skills for success

Which is your best side? Compare yourself to a product that you want to sell-how would you sell your knowledge to a company. Which strengths do you have that you can use to promote yourself? In today’s job market, you have to stand out from the crowd in order to be recognised and successful.

5 important key points

1. Apply and use your social media skills to advertise for you on social media platforms. According to we are social, then there are more than 3 billion active social media users around the world. In 2019, staggering 40,000,000 people in the UK used Facebook (revive.digital). This statistic shows, that Facebook has a great influence on people and is therefore well suited for advertising purposes because of the large number of people which can be reached. In addition, regarding revive.digital then the top 11 social media sites in 2019, used in the UK, are Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Google+, Pinterest, Snapchat, Linkedin, Tumblr and Reddit.

2. Show your knowledge. Imagine you want to create a dish that is well-organised and professionally presented. You should present your abilities in the same way. Find the skills that will positively support your application and show your expertise on the subject.

3. Advertise yourself as you would advertise a product. Also, a product has its weaknesses, which are good to know, but until you are asked about them, you must not mention them to anyone.

4. Believe in yourself and your ability, while not appearing arrogant or self-absorbed.

5. Never pretend to be someone else, stay authentic. Trust comes with being authentic.

Do your homework

You need to do some research about the company you are applying for because otherwise, this could quickly destroy your chances to work for the company. For some people, I guess this point may be naturally, but I also think for some not. According to Glassdoor 2018, first of all, you need to research what is the qualification that a company looks for in a candidate. Researching the company shows that you are interested in the company.

What do you need to know about the company

I consider it particularly important that you know about the mission of the company you are applying for. Furthermore, another point that I find really crucial is to check which products or services the company offers. That means you are aware of the company’s objectives.  Therefore, it is always better to have thoroughly researched the company. In addition, do read the job description very carefully so you understand which tasks and responsibilities you would be taking on in the company. There is nothing worse than applying for a job, without actually having an idea of what is required from you.

Recruiters view

In my opinion, to understand a topic you should always look at two different points of view. According to Linkedin Talent Solutions, then 89% of  14,000 candidates want to know more about the job details in the first message of a recruiter. Entirely 72%, and therefore in the second position, want to be informed about the salary range in the company. Furthermore, these surveys found that the most popular search for information about the company is the company website.

Choice of clothes

The choice of your clothes is the first impression a recruiter will get from you because of that chose your clothes wisely.

Rule number 1: Sweatpants, jeans with holes, unwashed and un-ironed clothes that even smell unpleasant are an absolute NO GO!

Rule number 2: Make sure that the clothes fit if they aren’t fitting probably then don’t wear them.

Rule number 3: Shinning and neon colours are great for a night out but not for a job interview-avoid them. Consider wearing colours such as black and navy blue which let you appear professional. In addition, the colour blue represents responsibility and trust (Canva 2019).

What do you have to offer

Since you are not the only person (probably) applying for the same position you need to think about what you can offer the company that someone else can’t. If you have hobbies or engage in extra-curricular activities, then highlight them because they define you as a person and demonstrate that you are willing to do more than expected of you:

“21st-century graduates need to demonstrate to employers that they can “hit the ground running”. In addition to working hard to gain a good degree, students should engage in extra-curricular activities…” (Carl Gilleard, Chief Executive of the Association of Graduate Recruiters)

Besides, the fact that you have a serious interest in the profession. The question here is what makes YOU unique. Based on information from the balance careers 2019, then employers looking, especially, for these skills:
