Is the idea of digital marketing as good as it is presented to us in the media and by big corporate giants? Are there negatives and positives that could affect the way you market and advertise your content? All will be discussed today, while focusing on a balanced argument to allow you to see what is best for your marketing strategy. There will be a fair argument between the two and I will leave it up to you to decide if digital marketing is as good as it seems and what you consider to think is best.

Looking at the positives of going digital, it is clearly seen that in this time period, being digital is the way to go as most audience members are very active online and see the digital world as their second lives. So by this, being online should be in you marketing plans for your content.

One of the first points that can be seen as positive to going digital would be the idea of global reach. Marketing and advertising online is seen by millions of people daily due to the fact that anyone can reach it if they have some sort of connection to the internet. Even if not in your specified audience or on a different platform, digital marketing allows your content to be known on larger scales than you would expect.

Also, digital marketing and advertising comes at a lower cost. Anyone can set up a Facebook or Instagram page free of charge and promote their content, product or service. Whereas with traditional marketing you would have to spend large amounts of money to promote your content, and even on a much smaller scale of reach. Additionally, it easily allows you to target your audience with some simple platform research, such as seeing that Facebook is mostly used by an older audience, whereas Instagram is used generally by young adults.

Lastly, another great positive to going digital with your marketing would be the idea that online activity is more easily measured, so you will be able to see how well your marketing is actually doing and working, which would be nearly impossible for traditional marketing. For example, Instagram lets you monitor your page activity daily if you set up a business account, so from here you can see who interacted with your content, how many times and with which posts in particular, which then lets you know what needs to be changed, edited, or what you should carry on doing as it is well received by the audience you are aiming at.

Although the above mentions some strong points about going digital, there are also some negatives that can come with it. Any method of advertising and marketing can have its downfalls so that’s important to understand here. To give you a balance view it is only fair to mention the next 3 negative points that can occur.

To start with, online marketing can be seen to be very time consuming. As online ads take a lot of time to edit and perfect, as well as online campaigns take a long time to maintain. This includes communicating with audience members and refreshing the data once in a while.

Also, while one of the above positive points shows how going digital online is great as it works on a global scale, this can also be a negative. This increases the amount of competition you have to go against to get your content noticed. Additionally, it can be challenging to stand out sometimes and create a unique selling point that other will not have on such a large scale. It requires more work and attention, as discussed in the previous point.

To finish off, we also have to consider that with going digital there will be some aspects you cannot control and that would be the comments and feedback you get. Some platforms allow you to block spam and you can delete hate or unwanted comments yourself manually, but this again supports the idea that digital marketing being time consuming and being really hard to control sometimes. This could also include getting back to customers or viewers of your content, online platforms can aid in this but also with the wrong amount of volume, it can get confusing and some messages and feedback can get lost.
