A Digital Marketing Timeline

Digital Marketing is an ever increasingly popular form of marketing, that should be a focus for many businesses. According to the Digital Marketing Institute, “Digital Marketing is the use of digital channels to promote or market products and services to targeted consumers and businesses.”

This infographic shows a basic timeline of the main developments that have lead to the advancement of a new form of Marketing. The world is moving away from the classic forms of  Marketing as Digital forms are more accessible and cheaper to produce on the mass. The promotions can be reached at a much quicker rate than some traditional forms; technological advances have allowed for considerable attrition in customer-based targeting.

The Cookie

The cookie was another important advancement in the digital marketing industry. This technique meant that companies can track common browsing habits and usage patterns of frequent internet users so they can tailor promotions and marketing campaigns to their personal tastes. Cookies in the modern sense are coded to offer marketers a variety of ways to collect literal user date. Therefore, this can be used to a companies advantage when they bring out different promotions for different age demographics or marital status.

Social Media

Throughout the timeline, it is clear to see that social media is a feature of technological developments that affects Marketing.  Almost 9 in 10 companies in the United States are using social media for marketing purposes; these can range from microblogging (i.e. Twitter) to sponsored adverts in twitter. The use of Social Media Marketing (SMM) means businesses can develop a consistent brand image; this may be professional and trustworthy or friendly and welcoming. As well as, bring more traffic to their websites, thus maximising their customer reach.
