The Top Album Of Each Year Of This Decade

With the turn of the decade coming in faster than a peacock driving a speed boat down the river Nile. It’s safe to say it’s been a cracking 10 years for music. With every music channel coming up with their lists on what they believe has been the best songs and albums of the last 10 years, no one quite has got it right. Where are the lists that are dictated by year? So, we thought we would make one for you. looking at the way music has evolved, and how that’s had  a profound affect on culture and the discussion of mental health- as these picks are fairly sad. Here it is:

  1. There Is A Hell Believe Me I’ve See It. There Is A Heaven Let’s Keep It A Secret- Bring Me The Horizon.

Is the title of this album long enough? Even so, it could snap a garlic naan in half just with the intro to crucify me. This may have not be their most popular album by todays degree but god damn this album hits harder than a priest firing a gatling gun at slightly out of date melons at a Tesco express. Yes, that’s right. Songs like Anthem, that were built around getting the crowd to bump heads, to songs like Don’t Go which still sends shock waves down my spine. In the 10 years prior bring me brought a storm into the metal world and with this turn of the last 10 years they brought a goliath into the running. This album was one of our picks because it created such a shift in my own thoughts on mental illness and awareness; and I think it did for a lot of people my age. This album helped coltivate an understanding of the many emotions that go into it, and while I believe the depressing tone of every Bring Me The Horizon album does this, this album was the first one that really clicked in my head as going ah yes I get that.

  1. The King Of limbs- Radiohead.

This is a revelation in the history of one of the biggest bands to hit the UK in the last 20 years. This album defined the era, and in my opinion defines Radiohead. Damn, this is the clash between their electronic and rock work that just fits perfectly on the lips like a knife made of cashew nuts. The crazed drumming of Bloom goes perfectly with the subtleness of Give Up The Ghosts. You really have it all in this album. I remember 2011 being a pretty good year for music everywhere, but this stood out. The album that I think made people really realise what sound engiering can achieve, and while it isn’t thought of as Radiohead’s best album, it certainly is one of the more insightful into just how crazed music can be while still stimulating our brains in a positive way. which inspired artists such as Puce Mary and Body Sculptures to test what electronic music can do.

  1. Dear G-d- Being As An Ocean.

Probably not everyone’s choice for this year, as I remember 2012 being a storm of album after album after album. This is the album that showcased one of melodic hardcore’s front runners as being more than just an ocean but being a bloody great band. The melodic poetry mixed with the harsh screams that led to this being quite simply one of the best albums to come out in not just the last 10 years but the last 20 years. While, their style today has some what changed, songs like the hardest part is forgetting those you swore you would never forget are still huge crowd hits and are requested at every gig they have done and will do. An album that made people care about poetry and how its evolved way before Rupi Kaur ever did. The blissful tones of remorse are enough to make you want to crack an egg over your head, drive to Cornwall, and become a druid.

  1. If You Leave- Daughter.

I’ll admit that this is probably one of the two albums most people have heard on this list already, and for that you’re welcome. An album people struggle to shut me up about, an album I hold close to me every night as I cry into a DVD copy of The Never Ending Story. The beautiful way in which every song speaks to its audience on a personal level truly isn’t overlooked and is still being talked about today- even if it’s just by me. Known today for its global hit Youth which has appeared in everything from tv shows to more tv shows- even so It still feels new and exciting. A redefining edge on how pop music is perceived. Daughter showed us that you don’t have to be in a metal band to write lyrics just as sad as careless whisper, and they did it so damn well.

  1. Tyrant- Aversions Crown.

Here’s another heavy one for you dark hearted super beings. I remember playing this album to my friends in school and them all crumbling into hot ash, complaining that it wasn’t Justin Bieber as we adjusted our Warhammer orcs to surround my cat. You could say I always liked to stand out? In all honesty, this album is a fantastic one to grind as you rush late to work in the Argos stock room for the second time this week, ol’ Barry isn’t going to be happy about this one. furthermore, you could say that break downs were just getting started before these guys came along. It’s creative, blast beat driven, music that gets you thinking about how different music has changed since the decade before, in every genre not just this one. When The Cure manafested the new wave go goth with ‘Pornography‘, I doubt they thought bands like this would be its grand-children. Thanks Robert, it’s been a blast.

  1. Giles Corey- Giles Corey.

Acoustic music was just warming up before this crazed depiction of music engineering came to light. The band named after the infamous witch trails, it’s safe to say self-titling was a good way to encompass this record. It may not have been the most popular album of 2015, but it sure left its mark, even if it was just on me. An album that is deathless in its breath-taking stylistic sampling and instrumental pieces. This truly is worthy of being on the list and if you haven’t heard it before GO DO IT NOW. The mix of creepy atmospherically music like Empty Churches sat alongside the sing along camp fire feel of Spectral Bride make for an album that brings the punches and the hits.

  1. love Is Not Enough- Casey.

While this may not be the most exposed album of 2016, a common theme on this list yes, this is our choice for the top spot. This album cuts through steal with its intro track Bloom, and carries that message of flowers to stand for so much more as it goes by. An album about loves loss strikes chills into even the most brutish of us. What incredible first record from this welsh act. While, I can see how this may not be everyone’s slice of tea, I bet you’d agree that this would blast a cow into a space with its energy. while, songs like Darling sing you into a trance which sit next door to Sleep which ironically I bet you can’t do to it. A band that tell us that men are allowed to cry, and that every emotion anyone has is valid- not just ones that are related to ex’s.

  1. Reaper- Nothing Nowhere.

Rap for us was changed by this album. While at times rock blends through into nothings beats and flows it’s clear that his image of this new age of ‘emo rap’ is crashing into popularity faster than it takes me to eat an entire chocolate orange for breakfast. An album that held its title throughout all of 2017 with its use of catchy chorus’ and incredible beats. With his move away from acoustic put fully in place its opening track Houdini leaves much to sink in as it leads you deeper into the wormhole until finally reaching Nevermore which feels like reminiscent of his older work but blending his new style making this the best album of 2017. Period. the way rap has evolved might be the biggest and quickest change in music history, the jump from 90’s gangster rap to 10’s emo rap is remarkable. a genre, which was filled with misogyny, getting rich, and hate for the police, now a remarkably platform about personal struggle and mental illness. wow.

  1. Holy hell- Architects.

All jokes aside, this is a master piece. A tragic beast that encompasses everything the bands going through and everything they’ve had to push through for this album. I know this is a gap in the text because I’m being serious but god damn Architects are an inspiration. An album about getting over the death of a loved one is always a hard pill to swallow, but the way in which they have done it is incredible. Go check it out.

  1. Veleno- Fleshgod Apocalypse.

I took some time with this one, and I’m sorry to IGOR because this album was just ahead in my year list. It was like pulling the sword out of the stone and then the sword attacking my collection of stuffed Disney toys. This album is a fantastic example of just how far Flesh god have come since their first album. This album hits harder than a 4thcentaury trebuchet. With powerhouses like Sugar throws your katsu curry into a volcano, while later Embrace The Oblivion makes you feel like He-Man taking down a Hannibal Lecter with a chainsaw. What a way to end the decade, aye?

And that’s our list. What’s your favourite album of the decade? Send them to us via our twitter.

remember we don’t own the album art for any of these albums.
