Bring Me The Horizon- Music To Listen To… Review

The ep we didn’t know we’d get and the review no one asked for, are both hitting your screens. a record with a title longer than my list of short comings in life. are you ready for this? ‘Music to  listen to~dance to~blaze to~pray to~feed to~sleep to~talk to~grind to~trip to~breathe to~help to~ hurt to~scroll to~roll to~love to~hate to~learn too~plot to~play to~be to~feel to~breed to~swear to~dream to~hide to~live to~die to~ Go to.” Christ, I imagine it’s good to revise to, as well. After hearing Bring Me were hitting our ears with new music soon, I have to say, I was excited. But, this isn’t quite what i’d expected. While, this is a creative, it certainly isn’t quite the master piece that AMO was; or any of their previous works- and that includes ‘This is What The Edge Of Your Seat Was Made For‘ for all you naysayers out there. But, given that they have already realised an album this year, and written Ludens– a song almost as good as the game it was written for- I imagine writing another full length of the same capacity wasn’t the first thing on their minds. That is why this project is so so important. For a band of this level to realise an experimental ep like this,  just on the heels of an album, is exceptional.

However, it’s easy these songs feel like a mix match of ideas rejected off Amo, and further more, to say the features leave much to desire. Nothing like the full force of Grimes and Dani Filth which led their last work. Bexey was truly a waste on this project, and could/should have been replaced by any and all recording of a cow mooing or the sounds of the curse of youtube, say it with me, “lets play RAGE SHADOW LEGENDS”. Even that 5 seconds of over saturated insight into the mind of consumer capitalism would’ve been better than Bexey’s entire ‘I have my grandfathers gun’ nonsense; which left us feeling without hope in this project. it was like having a basket full of bees- people would be happy there’s more bees around, except they are right in my face telling at me that they have a weapon attached to their butts and there is no escape. Making the songs without features much stronger and far more enjoyable and perfect for driving down the M25 at night while throwing garlics naan bread at any speed camera you see. With this in mind, these songs don’t bang quite as hard as Charles Mingus’ ‘Me Myself and Eye’, and that kids is a disappointment.

Although, It certainly won’t be forgotten like Don’t Look Down; although sometimes we are thankful for that. this does include some of Bmth’s best material to date, some of the best production, and certainly the longest of their songs yet. I mean how long does ‘underground big {HEADFULOFHYENA}‘ and its whooping 24 minute run time. It takes guts to go from being one of the biggest bands of 2020 to dropping what is just a trippy mix of material that didn’t fit into AMO. I will still say this is one of their most exciting and fun realises this decade, and with it coming to close, I must say I am excited for what is in store for us coming soon. aren’t you?

This was one of the best creative projects we’ve seen all year and I must say this has solidified Bring Me’s place in hall of fame. It proves that after years of leading genres, scenes, a generation, that they are the Bowie of the modern era. They have been creative a vast catalogue of work that has know no bounds and has been stunning people like myself for years. Perhaps my favourite work of theirs to date, it’s got me flipping.
