Wondering how you can create an online presence through social media for your business?
Whilst studying at university I am also running the social media for a restaurant, where I have Enlighted the owners unsure about social media about the perks of it whilst also learning a lot along the way. I am sharing my knowledge to help break down the importance social media has to companies as free advertising and the different ways you and your company can benefit from different platforms.
The digital impact social media has for businesses is extraordinary, with almost every business using it as a source to advertise and publish their content. Each platform is evolving and creating new features that allow bigger connections and more interaction to happen between consumer and company.

Every social media platform is used in different ways with various features which usually focus on different audiences, which can be used for different types of reasons. Even between Instagram and Facebook there is a huge different in approach and audiences. This is due to so many variables including the content, its features and the time of release etc, which all contribute to the specific demographic of people who use the different platforms. I’m going to start with the basics by breaking down each social media platform and providing the information you may need to decide which platform will be best for your business.

Facebook was founded in 2004, making it one of the original social media platforms, making that a key reason why a lot of older people tend to use it over others like Instagram. The key demographic of Facebook is made up of 72% 50-64 year olds, which is a huge amount considering social media is usually associated with younger generations. Facebooks attraction to users comes from the simplicity of it and the access to contact to family and friends in one place. As well as keeping in contact with friends, there is also a feature that allows consumers to like pages, which in our case is where you’d be able to set up a page for your own business. You’re able to post everything from contact information to opening times, and post events which allows people to connect with it and say whether they are interested, going etc. The page feature is used by a lot of brands to reach out to potential customers.
Starbucks Facebook Page
Instagram is known for being an image sharing platform, launching in 2010, making it a lot newer than Facebook and a lot more popular with younger people, as 64% of users are between 18 and 34. This Is down to the recent release date and the type of platform it is, as its seen as being for a younger audience then Facebook, with everything down to the logo seeming younger. Although, the Instagram feature for businesses is great, as it allows access to view the insights behind your page, showing how many people you’ve reached with your posts and how many interactions you’ve had from them. Along with that you are able to boost posts, and create sponsored posts, which shows your posts to people who don’t follow you for a fee, which is good if you’re keen on broadening your potential customers quickly. This helps when trying to gain a younger target audience by posting quality content often it can create relationships with your followers.
Using Twitter for businesses is best at building a community, as it isn’t tailored for promoting smaller businesses. Most big companies who have successfully used it tend to create entertaining content, mixed in with promoting their business. As Twitter was founded in 2006 as a way for friends to interact, it’s stuck in its routes throughout the years, although now on a much bigger scale with tweets being able to go viral on a worldwide scale.ON average, 37% of twitter users are between the ages of 18 and 29, and 29.25% are between 30-49 years old, proving it is a lot of young and older adults on the platform. A company that has famously worked well at creating a Twitter presence is Netflix US, as they use memes, which are essentially funny images, as a way of generating response on their posts.

SNAPCHAT
The last popular social media platform I am going to focus on is Snapchat, founded in 2011, making it the newest platform out of the ones i’ve spoken about. It isn’t often looked at as a platform in which companies are able to advertise due to it being a platform tailored at being a personal place for friends only. Although using this notion of making the posts more personal can work in your favour on Snapchat as you could create a place for the ‘behind the scenes’ of your company, as this is a thing that a lot of people have become more interested in, especially in recent years. By creating a more relaxed ‘chatty’ place to share with your community it also allows consumers to gain more trust if they’re able to have an insight to those running the business.
Social media is such an important platform for businesses to be able to gain a community and promote for free. In my next posts I will go into more details about the different platforms and the varied features you’re able to use on them that will help build the engagement with your followers and potentual consumers.
